It's 2001. Mabel reunites with Danny to terminate her pregnancy. She's entangled in a lot, but still dreams of getting to Iqaluit.
Director's Statement
I wanted the viewer to be at level with the characters, who live in a world without much gloss. It’s a rust-belt piece, about the life of Great Lakes youth who dream of the North. It's linear and non-linear, kind of like Mabel. Iqaluit is a place inside Mabel, and also a place she wants to make real on the outside. She's trapped on the edges of a the rust-belt town. For a moment, she is able to share with Danny how the mere thought of Iqaluit can nearly take her there. I wanted to capture how the sharing of an inner life feels when it's something you've done for the first time, and how it feels to have to untangle yourself from someone who has misunderstood what you've shared. A vintage film lens, 4:3 framing and era inspired music give us a more direct access to Mabel's turn-of-the-century, coming-of-age experience. The film was shot in Staten-Island, New Jersey and Brooklyn by an international crew and cast.
